What is Emotional Load

Everyone carries a certain load or heaviness

  • This load is the result of unprocessed emotions
  • And can be felt both psychologically and physically

How do people become emotionally burdened?

  • As a result of your own experiences (emotional load)
  • As a result of the experiences of others (emotional charge)
  • As a result of being overburdened by circumstances and responsibilities   (emotional overload)

Advantages

  • Use of the concept of emotional burden or load leads to a clear description of psychological problems, by which the treatment can be built up constructively
  • Clients respond positively to it. They recognize themselves in the terminology, the theory and the model. And take more responsibility for their own recovery, because they are given the right tools.
  • The prevailing view that psychological problems are the result of an ‘illness’ can be abandoned.
  • Clients can and will take more responsibility for their own health
  • Health care costs will go down

The empty chair conversations

  • The client expresses to the parent in which needs he or she was not seen as a child
  • The parent initially responds with denial (defence)
  • The therapist lets the parent share his or her own history and pain
  • The parent’s defences disappear and he/she can be open to his/her child
  • The parent can empathize and recognize that the client has not been sufficiently seen in his/her needs and has had painful experiences

Practically all parents (in the empty chair ) spontaneously exclaim:

But I do love you!
